The Source page defines the Automatic generation chain used by every automatic generation: the editor Generate Automatically button, bulk generation, cron and imports. Drag banks to set priority. The first checked bank is tried first; if it returns no image, the next one is tried.
Gutenberg search banks are not chosen here. The photo tabs shown in the Gutenberg block are configured on the Gutenberg Block page. API keys, sizes and filters for every bank still live on Source.

Left column: Automatic generation chain #
The alert at the top of the page states: this list is the fallback chain used by every automatic generation (editor button, bulk, cron, imports). Drag to set priority. Gutenberg search banks are chosen on the Gutenberg Block page.
Under Automatic generation chain: “Used by the editor button, bulk generation, cron and imports. Drag to reorder: the first bank is tried first.”
- Check a bank to add it to the chain. Uncheck it to remove it. Unchecked banks stay in the list below the active chain.
- Drag rows to change order. Position numbers (1, 2, 3…) show the try order.
- Click Configure (or the bank name) to open that bank’s settings on the right.
- If nothing is checked: “No bank selected. Add at least one bank below, otherwise no image can be generated.”
- If you change the chain without saving: “Chain not saved yet. Generation on posts still uses the last saved chain until you click Save.”
Example chain: Bing Images → Openverse → Default image. Automatic generation tries Bing first, then Openverse, then assigns your default image if both fail.
Badges #
- Photos — search banks (Bing Images, Google Image (API), Openverse, Flickr, Pixabay, Youtube, Unsplash, Pexels).
- AI — generative banks (GPT Image, Stable Diffusion, Replicate, Ideogram, Flux 2, Gemini (Nano Banana), Grok).
- Local — pixels come from your site (First image in content, Default image).
- Pro — locked on the free version (Youtube, Unsplash, Pexels, Stable Diffusion, Replicate, Ideogram, Flux 2, Gemini (Nano Banana), Grok).
Key status #
Each enabled bank shows a status badge:
- Ready — no API key required (for example Bing Images, Openverse, Flickr, First image in content, Default image).
- No key — this bank needs an API key (and for Google Image (API), a CX id) and none is saved.
- Untested — a key is saved but has not been tested yet.
- Key OK — the last test succeeded.
- Key failed — the last test failed. Open Configure and check the key.
Right column: Banks Settings #
Banks Settings: “Select a bank on the left to edit its API key, size, language and filters.” The panel title matches the selected bank and repeats its key status.
Each bank has its own options (API key, image size, language, license, and so on). See the bank pages:

Preview a search #
Preview a search tests the selected bank without creating an image on a post. The description reads: “Test this bank without creating an image on a post. Uses the last saved API key and filters.”
The keyword field defaults to sunset. Click Preview to run a test against the last saved settings (unsaved key or filter changes are ignored until you click Save).
If the selected bank is generative AI, a warning appears: “This bank (Bank Name) is a generative AI service. Preview will consume tokens.”

Click Save Changes at the bottom of the page after you reorder the chain or edit a bank.
Visual style for AI banks (photorealistic, illustration, custom prompts, “No text on the image”) is not set on Source. Configure it under Automatic → Image Placement → Style. See AI style and custom prompts.
